Summary
Zimantic is a browser extension that helps you learn a language by translating text, rewriting sentences, looking up vocabulary, and quizzing you on words. The developer runs no server and never receives your text, API key, or saved words. Some data does leave the browser: text you submit goes to the AI endpoint you configure, settings including your API key sync through your Google account, and an online speaking voice may send the phrase you play to that voice provider.
How text is processed
The extension sends text only after you ask it to. That includes a rewrite, a translation, a vocabulary lookup, a quiz check, a revealed quiz answer, and "improve this prompt" in settings. The text goes only to the API endpoint saved in the extension settings. The extension does not send the page address, your browsing history, or the rest of the page.
Third-party AI providers
You choose the endpoint. It may be a local model such as Ollama or LM Studio, or a cloud provider such as OpenAI, Google AI Studio, or OpenRouter. That provider's own policy covers what it does with the text. Free tiers of Google AI Studio and OpenRouter may use submitted text to train or improve their models. A paid key, or a local model, keeps that text off those training systems.
What is stored
Settings stored in chrome.storage.sync include the API URL, API key, model name, language preferences, voice preferences, UI preferences, and any custom prompts you edit. Chrome sync stores those through your Google account and copies them to other Chrome browsers signed into that account. The developer cannot read them. To keep the API key off Chrome sync, turn Chrome sync off for this browser.
Saved API presets, the vocabulary deck, and review history stay in chrome.storage.local on this device. The deck includes the word, translation, definition, example sentences, quiz sentence, pronunciation, and review stats. The developer never receives this. Removing a word deletes that entry. Uninstalling the extension or clearing its site data deletes the local deck and presets. Activating a preset copies that preset's API URL and API key into chrome.storage.sync, so the active key is part of Chrome sync even though the preset list stays on the device.
Text-to-speech
Pronunciation uses the browser SpeechSynthesis API. The extension does not record or store audio. If you pick a voice marked as online, the browser sends the spoken phrase to that voice provider, such as Google or Microsoft. A voice that runs on the device does not send the phrase. The default voice name is an online voice, "Microsoft Katja Online (Natural)", when that voice is installed.
Permissions
storage- Saves the settings, presets, and vocabulary deck described above.
activeTab- Lets an action you invoke use the current tab. The content script, under the host permission below, is what reads a selection.
contextMenus- Adds the right-click item "Pronounce and define".
sidePanel- Shows the translation panel.
Host access to all URLs- A content script runs on pages you visit, including frames inside those pages, so the toolbar can appear when you select text and so a modifier-click can look up the word under the cursor. The same access lets the extension call whatever API address you entered. The script reads the selection you act on and inserts its own toolbar and card. It does not collect browsing history, and it does not send page text unless you trigger a feature listed above.
What the extension does not do
It does not include analytics, telemetry, usage tracking, crash reporting, or advertising identifiers. It does not sell data. The developer has no account system and no copy of your text or API key.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
The effective date above changes when this policy changes.
